Women in Sierra Leone have a 1 in 20 lifetime risk of dying in childbirth/post-partum

10% of children in Sierra Leone will die before their 5th birthday, and the likelihood of this increases if their mothers experience maternal mortality.

This year, we are hoping to raise $1500 for a new Maternal Center of Excellence (MCOE).

The MCOE is set to open at the end of 2023 and will slowly scale up services until full operation in 2025. This center will provide comprehensive healthcare and education to pregnant and nursing mothers. It is expected to double healthcare coverage for mothers and newborns in the city of Kono by 2026.

Advocating for Global Health Equity

 Paul Farmer Memorial Resolution

Dr. Paul Farmer’s vision and lifelong commitment to delivering high-quality health care in impoverished settings inspired a paradigmatic shift in global health, including the creation of PEPFAR and the Global Fund. The Resolution honors Dr. Farmer by enshrining his vision for global health equity, and providing practical policy solutions to make it a reality.

  • It calls for the U.S Federal Government to adopt a 21st century global health solidarity strategy that:

    1. Increases U.S. global health spending to $125 billion per year

    2. Improves the effectiveness and efficiency of U.S. global health spending by localizing funding and investing in national health infrastructure

  • Take actions to address past and ongoing harms that undermine the health and wellbeing of people around the world by:

    1. Supporting global economic justice reforms

    2. Supporting redress for the harms of colonialism and ecological breakdown

Community Health Workers Access Act

Dr. Farmer often reminded us that the United States “is on the globe, too.” Recognizing health inequities are unjust regardless of where they occur, PIH Engage proudly supports crucial investments in health infrastructure within the US. The Community Health Worker Access Act is a draft bill that would increase access to CHW services for Medicare and Medicaid beneficiaries to improve whole-person, coordinated care.

Stay tuned for more info about how to contact your representatives to push for these bills!
